Surprise Jacket no longer

I decided to revisit a UFO (unfinished object).

This suprise baby jacket / sweater was completed about a year ago. But I didn't like the wide sleeves and uneven lengths of the front and back panels. I think someone mentioned the machine knit pattern I was using has an error in it somewhere. So this yarn was quickly recycled and is tranforming into a basic garter jacket.

I've got body finished. And am working on both sleeves at the same time.

HSS2 update

My HSS2 package went owl post to my swap pal Lily Ravenclaw. A week after the deadline. I received word it arrive safely. My pal continues to dilligently work on her sock transfiguration spell for my socks. She refuses to open my package until her package is complete. Very admirable. So I will hold off on my reveal pics so I don't spoil her surprise.

This is one of the un-progress pics.
Had to visit the frog pond after completing both socks.

Here is the package before I packed it. The finished sock is peeping out a bit.
Package weighted about 5 lbs.

HSS2 Design Entry

Here is my design submission for the Hogwarts Design challenge.
The challenge was to design something Harry Potter related.

I created a graph of Fawkes surrounded by flames to place on a cup cozy.
You can use the JAVA pattern from MagKnits and add this phoenix graph to it.

There are a couple of adjustments.
1. As instructed, place 1st stitch marker at the beginning of the round but place the second marker after 31 stitches (not 25).

2. Original pattern knits up in 21 rounds. This graph is taller at 28 rounds. So continue with pattern until you complete the graph rounds.

Choose Your Knitting Wands

My Hogwarts Sock Swap 2 pal asked how socks can be knitted with circulars instead of DPNs.

There are two methods. The first with one very long circular 'wand'. Also known as the Magic Loop method.

I've tried both and found I prefer the two circ method since the Magic Loop puts tension between the two stitches where the loop of the long cable is folded. I still use the Magic Loop method sometimes if I don't have two of the same size circ wands handy. And I love it that two socks or two sleeves can be finished at the same time.

HSS2: Spells for Mini Wands - Stitch Markers

A student asked if I could share my incantation for Stitch Marking Wands (stitch markers). So for the benefit of those new to mini wand incantations... Muffliato!

This was fun to do and probably takes longer to explain than to do. I searched Hogwart's library and found an incantation similar to what I used. http://www.sheepinthecity.prettyposies.com/archives/000201.html

Ingredients found at a tiny (craft) store at Diagon Alley that sold rainbow beads, dragon tears, ocean spray, elf made rings and silver moonlight head pins.

Choosing the ingredients is such a subjective thing.
Here is how I went about it. I conjured the wands like a story with a headline, a subhead and body of text. One 1/4 inch large bead would be the 'headline' focal point. Medium 'subhead' beads about 1/8 inch would give added color and texture. And the body is made up of small neutral color seed beads (helps the colors on medium and large beads stand out more.) (Make sure the seed beads have holes large enough to go on the head pins.) I chose to place one large focal point towards the bottom to visually anchor the wand. The rest, I folded a piece of white paper in half, and put beads on the inside fold to play with combinations of size and sequence until I liked what I saw and then placed them on the head pin.

Note: Longer markers with thick glass beads may end up being heavy. So shorter markers may be more user friendly to a sock knitter. I just happen to like the length to look like a wand. So my markers may be a bit heavier. Certainly the one with the largest bead on it.

HSS2: A Successful Spell!

I'm having fun running around the muggle net hunting up the proper ingredients for my yarn making potion. In the meantime I conjured up these stitch marking wands for Lily. After numerous wrong incantations. It finally worked!

Hogwarts Sock Swap 2 (HSS2) Questionnaire

I'm a First Year in the Hogwarts Sock Swap TWO knitalong which runs from August 1 to October 31. Deputy Headmistress McGonagall has confirmed my application. Yeah!

Sign-ups started on July 14th and is filling up fast. So if you want to make and swap a pair of magical socks you can go here.

First Years are participants who didn’t enter the Hogwarts swap the first time around. Their swap packages will include: socks, a set of their pal's (house color) stitch markers and a set of sock needles.

Here are my answers to Hogwarts Sock Swap Questionnaire.

I don't currently use double pointed. For socks, I use 2 circulars or 1 long circular. I'm really awful about dropping DPNs. But if I have to choose then...

I'm with Gryffindor. Love the burgundy-gold combo. I also love dark colors of wine, navy, and purples. Solid or gradual color changes, or stripes. Not Jaquard.

Allergies? Do you have any? Will your knitting be exposed to smoke or animals?
No fiber or pet allergies. I have animalgus Kois guarding my knitting. Otherwise yarns are stored in plastic bags and/or in bins when not in use.

Are you an international participant (outside US)? Are you willing to have an international Hogwarts Sock Pal?
I'm in the US. International pal? Sure. Europe? Japan? Canada?

(My pal asked what length of sock I prefer. Calf length. Not knee socks.)

Time at the Guild

I've been away from my site for so long.

Around January of 2006 I pitched in as an editor of the Carolinas Machine Knitters Guild (CMKG). That and along with life's busy schedule has kept me away.

Knitwise I have always kept a project on hand while traveling. With lots of UFOs still waiting for completion.

And I managed to knit a bit on my knitting machines. I usually don't get much opportunity to sit still to machine knit. And last year I knit something for submission to the CMKG yearly contest. My incentive was to knit something to qualify for a complimentary copy of the book. (No, since I'm not part of the contest staff, I'm not qualified to automatically get a copy).

What a lovely surprise last year when I placed First Place in the Beginner category.

This year I didn't have time for a timely entry. But I still put something in the contest book.

When I hunt down my knit pics over the last year. I'll post them.

CIT Swatch Yarns B1 & B2

I set aside my first swatch for a couple of days and revisited it today. Doing that and checking the feedback. (Most advised to choose another yarn that's less busy and with less halo). I face the fact that I shall find a more suitable project for that beautiful yarn.

I've stash dived and came up with this one to try. Worsted Top of the Lamb. And since I've only got 1lb of it. I've paired it with NatureSpun sport for the sleeves. I've got 2lbs of it.
(I'll have to adjust for the thinner sport weight.)

I've been saving a cone of scrumptuous 100% Alpaca Burgundy-Old Gold tweed to knit something special. The scale confirms there's two pounds of it. Woohoo. Enough to make the sweater.

Do you think tweed is too busy?

Here is what the yarn looks like. The red should still be a bit deeper red.

I got gauge using 2 strands, U.S.#7 needles, knit flat. But the stitches are too open. So I'll be doing up another swatch with three strands.

Kerry Blue Shawl - Nearing the End

The shawl is off the needles. Here it is on the last knit row. My 2 year old is holding it. It's taller than her.

The Search for the Right Yarn

I'm finishing up another project before starting on the KAL. But for the past couple of weeks I've been thinking about what yarn to use for the KAL.

I have lots of yarn but the usual excuses come up.
Not the right thickness. (This happens most of the time)
Not enough of one color. (Only have 9 skeins of a Burgundy DK)
Not the right color. (Majority of other colors are not in the red family)
It's tweed and I need solid. (I have a beautiful burgundy/gold alpaca cone, might be too busy with cables. Not sure if I have enough yarn too.)

I would love to get some Blackwater Abbey yarn. The swatch samples posted by another knitter looks so pretty.

But what is the point of a yarn stash if all the excuses prevent me from using them? So I'm determined to stash dive. I agree that the cable detail would show better with a medium shade of color. So black and inky blue is out.

I have a 2-3 pound cone of navy superwash that I'm going to try. It's a thin sock yarn so I'll have to knit with at least five strands held together. This is the first time I'm knitting more than two strands. So I'll see if it drives me crazy or not.

So here is my summary and my substitution yardage calculations.

Yarn: HAMANAKA Men’s Club Master. Yarn color: Wine (#9)

Content: Superwash Wool 60% acrylic 40%, 50g skein, approximately 85m
Needle sizes recommended:
(Japanese needle size 7-8 or 4.2mm-4.5mm)
nearest U.S. needle size 6 – 7 or 4.25mm - 4.5mm
Yardage: Jacket 865g (865g divided by 50g skeins) = 17.3 skeins
Hat 120g (120g divided by 50g skeins) = 2.4 skeins
Jacket plus hat requires 19.7 skeins

(Note: 1 meter = 1.0936132983 yards)
Kanzawa site lists yarn at … 85meters per skein.

(I've removed the calculations of 85 meters. The following is the correct yardage reference)

At 75 meters per skein...
19.7 multiplied by 75 = 1477.5 meters = 1615.81 yards for Jacket and Hat
17.3 multiplied by 75 = 1297.5 meters = 1418.96 yards for Jacket only
(Add a skein or two to ensure you have enough yarn for your project)

Buttons:
7 buttons of size 2cm x 1.5 cm (the ones on the pattern picture are shaped like an oak leaf)

Size: Pattern only provides one size.
Jacket: Finished chest circumference = 99.5cm (38.8 inch)
Finished jacket length = 57cm (22.2 inch)
Finished sleeve length = 76.5cm (29.8 inch)
Hat: Finished hat circumference = 54cm (21.1 inch)
Finished hat depth = 20.5cm (8 inch)

Secret Pal Strikes again!

Crossed in Translations - Japanese Translation TIPS

I'm excited to join in the Crossed in Translation knitalong. For this beautiful sweater set. And I just got in my copy of the book. As mentioned here on my blog, I don't know Japanese. But have worked on interpreting a toddler japanese pattern from another book. So here are a few hints on interpreting the pattern.

Suggested Cast on method:
Looks like a tubular cast on is the method I'll try on the ribbing. There are several tutorials for Tubular cast on that require cutting the waste yarn. But I like this one the best. Using a string of crochet stitches to start with and then just pull the end of the crochet stitches to remove quickly, without cutting. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=65253.new

Gauge - On the project description, line 8. It mentions 10cm. On the same sentence is 28 a boxy charater then 24 and another character.
edited: In addition it lists A~I with a four character phrase before it. The phrase = pattern stitch
Translation: Swatch size is 10cm or 4" square. 28 stitches, 24 rows in pattern stitch A through I.

Yarn substitution possibilities - Aran weight yarns: Cascade 200, Blackwater Abbey, Virtual Y arn 3-ply (Stitches have less definition), Jamieson's or Jamieson & Smith (Stitches have more definition). They're all nice yarns. On the Hebride knit list, it's been suggested that DK yarn may work too.

Yarn substitution calculations:

On the a top of the back panel chart is 14 (40 boxy character)
Translation: 14 cm (40 stitches)

Increase and decrease notations. For example the sleeve increases noted as 2-1-6 and then 4-1-2.
Translation: First number is how many rows before an increase,
second is how many stitches to increase, third number is how
many repeats.
From example increase every 2nd row, 1 stitch at each end,
repeat 6 times, then increase every 4th row, 1 stitch at each
end, repeat two times.

Additional decreases by sets.
On right side of the back panel are three sets of decreases. Then a '> 9 with box in box character'.
Translation: You decrease as noted 1-1-3 and 2-1-1, repeat the first then second decrease sets 9 times before doing the third set of decreases.
(Box in Box is the charactor for 'Repeat')

On each of the diagrams is a bold arrow.
Translation: Cast on from that edge and knit in arrow direction.
(I've seen on another pattern where there were two arrows on the
diagram. Indicating to cast on above the ribbing to knit up and
then pick up on cast on to knit down for waist ribbing.)

The script 'L' symbol is knit through the back so the stitch twists.

I don't know about the symbol that looks like a flying fish. Someone mentioned the Austrian Twisted Stitch (Bovarian Twisted stitch) is part of this pattern. Is this it? I'm going to look up this stitch in the 'Knitting in the Old Way" book.
edit: "Knitting in the Old Way" describes the traveling cable as a cable formed by a knit twist stitch with the knit or purl background stitch. Twisting the stitch gives the cable more depth.

In the aran pattern, there are two types of flying fish symbols. One with a hyphen underneath the fish flipper and one without the hyphen. A hyphen means the cable is formed by a knit twist in front and purl stitch on back. No hyphen means two knit twist stitches that cable cross. For how-to diagrams (without a cable needle method) click HERE and scroll down to the flying fish symbols. Note: Read the diagrams from RIGHT to LEFT. This link has clearer images on how to knit through back loop for a "knit twist stitch", and purl through back loop for a "purl twist stitch" .

Japanese Knitting Symbols - Demystified

On the Hebride list. There was a request to clarify a symbol used in the front cover sweater. And some question on the flying fish symbol. I checked my Japanese pattern books and found the two symbols in question. I also found that Tata-tatao has illustrations for the most common ones too.

Slow progress

With the winter weather I have a bunch of projects I would love to finish up. But I've had little time to focus on my knitting. Other life obligations butting in.

I did finish the feather fan portion of KBS, a few rows on the Mosaic socks, and a test swatch here and there.

I've also had to take long breaks from my knitting since my tendonitis has crept back into my wrists again. I'm determined to help them heal before I start to knit the next Aran project (I hope). =)

Coloring Fibers

Thought it would be a fun project with the kids to colorize some yarn.

It was very easy. I used this instruction.

I wanted to create matching balls of sock yarn. So I wound two strands into each skein.

This is what I did.

--Wash the yarn with some dishwashing soap to remove any oils.
--Rinsed, left wet, and put into a shoe box.
--Mixed up colors (green, blue, orange). With Easter egg dye tablets, I used half tablets and later added the other half. I should get 6 shades of color plus any color blends.
--Spooned dots of color on both sides of the yarn. Then stripes of blue.
That's when I realized I forgot to add vinegar. So I added vinegar to the dyes and worked it into the yarn.
(I still forgot the salt)
--I had some dye left over. So I diluted the green with a cup of water and worked it into the yarn.
--I dyed a new skein of yarn with the leftover colors. Half orange, half blue.
--Cooked the yarns in the microwave at 2 minute intervals. (Twice)
--Wrung out the water and put it on a rack to dry.

My son loves the 3-color yarn. He say it looks like the sea with the dark colors as seaweed and the orange as fish. It is named...

The 2-color yarn should be mini stripes for a pair of toddler socks.

Mosaic-progress

I'm loving how the Mosaic is turning out on the socks and thought I'd share it.

Here a sweater that fits my little one. Placed on top as a comparison. The chest area is 1" wider. The sleeve tapers to half of the Surprise sweater sleeve. Not too bad.

Maybe I should finish it and see how it fits. Just don't know if I should keep the shortness in front. It does look designer-ish!

6SocksKAL - The deadline for the Mosaic sock is the end of this month. I'm still on the cuff of the both socks. So I don't know if I'll finish them on time to enter the monthly raffle.

The self striping yarn from my secret pal are revealing themselves beautifully. The Mosaic is surprizingly easy. Since it's a pattern with more that one color. I can't knit with my eyes closed and just count. So finding time to not multi-task and knit is a bit of a challenge.

Kerry Blue Lace Shawl - I have been knitting steadily on the shell pattern of this shawl. Since there are several knit rows interspersed between the shell stitches. I can knit this one with my eyes closed while on car rides. Or while reading bedtime stories to the kiddies each night.

Surprise Sweater - Boo Boo

I started on the Surprise Sweater using the worksheet at the end of this pattern Surprise Jacket. It's a machine knit pattern that I used for hand knitting.

I had to redo the mitered part a couple of times until I got the hang of it. I have to do a kind of short row wrap to avoid holes. Otherwise it has two rows of lace at the center of the miter. Now it's 1/2 complete. (Except for the ribbing for the bottom and sleeve cuffs)

It looks like the correct chest size but the sleeves look wrong (quite wide in my opinion).

So it's this project is on hold for now until I get the chance to check my measurements and calculations.

Certainly a cool and unique pattern.

Secret Pal Strikes Again!

I came home to a wonderful surprise over the weekend. I had another visit from my secret pal. This is what greeted me when I opened the package.

A box full of new yarns to play with! Ooooo, ahhhhh. And a multi-directional scarf pattern that would be great with all the yarns. Ooooo, ahhhhh again. And how thoughtful to include for my little one; stickers, patterns and cute yellow buttons.

Now if only she would reveal herself. Can't wait to get to know such a thoughtful and generous person.

Recycling Fiber - Swatch This

Sampler Pack Arrives

The helmet pattern has evolved substantially into a convertible cap. Can be worn with mask over or under the nose. On not-so-frigid days the mask can be stuffed into the hat and worn with the brim folded a little further down.

I've dubbed it the SKI-MET (Ski hat and helmet in one). It's basically a K2P2 ribbed watch cap knit with heavy worsted wool (slightly itchy). The mask was added by picking up stitches, 1 inch prior to the hat fold, for one row in the light green to match the hat. Then switching to a (non-itchy) Wool ease (sport) for the rest of the mask. Ribbed down for 1 inch and binded off for the face opening. Then on the next row, casted on the same number as bound off stitches and continued ribbing until it was long enough to cover the neck.

I noticed the seam between the ski cap and helmet would show and the brim would have to be manually folded each time it was worn. So I sewed the cap to the helmet about 1/4 inch below where the stitches were picked up. Now the SKI-MET has a nice fold at the brim.

Since a hat is worn tilted up above the brow as opposed to a helmet that is worn without tilting. You will notice the extra fabric gathering in the back of the neck. I'm going to leave the pattern this way since the neck will be kept warm when it is bent forward to roll all those snowballs. ;-)

Now I just have to weave in the ends and I'm done.

Recycling Fiber

I came across a hand made sweater that got shrunk/semi-felted in the wash. (Not by me).
I had played with the idea that it could be steeked (cut) in the middle and converted into a cardigan. Although I thought the underarm areas were probably too thick to be comfortable. And it lacked the drape to hug a body, belling out in spots so there would be cold air sweeping up underneath. I considered taking the sleeves off and knitting a flexible cable strip along the sleeve and shoulder seams. And adding ribbing to the bottom. But I didn't have any more of this yarn.

The yarn is likely a Wendy chunky yarn. The same heather pink odd ball yarnI used on my little one's poncho. I love the heather look of this yarn and I don't like felted sweaters. So I decided to unravel the sweater instead. It took a bit of elbow grease to undo and there were fiber bits flying around everywhere. But it's now 4-5 skeins of chunky yarn.

I swatched it on US #10 needles to see what it looks like. The yarn feels comfortable, not stiff and still retains it's quality. It does have various bits of felt so it doesn't look smooth in stockinette stitch. A very home grown looking fabric. I also tried it in garter stitch and I'm amazed at how much of the felt blends in so it's a good looking fabric. So I'm inspired to use this yarn with EZ's surprise baby sweater.

KBS progress

My Kerry Blue Shawl (KBS) is turning out nicely. As mentioned, I'm on the shell stitch. I think it should be much easier now since I frogged it and fixed any erroneously shifted stitches. It's now easy to see any misteps in the knitting.

Socktoberfest Progress

Finally have a moment to post some pics.

Mosaic Socks started for the 6Sox knitalong. I've already checked both Regia skeins to make sure the patterning will start at the same spot.

And here is my progress on the Amble socks. The pattern is a bit muddied by the wool fibers (Would be more defined with cotton). But I think it will block out nicely once I finish.

I've only got one large skein of the tweed yarn. And I'm not sure if there is enough. Wouldn't it look silly if I had to switch yarns at the top of the ski mask? I can just imagine him rejecting it 'cause it didn't match on top. So I converted the pattern to knit from top down. I started on Monday and have knitted enough to cover his short hair. He tried it on and it fits.

It's turning out very nicely. He did make a comment that ithe yarn has flecks of red. But then again it has a rainbow of flecks so it still meets with his approval. Whew.

Over the weekend I tried to run this heavy worsted yarn on my knitting machine. But it popped out of the standard gauge knitting machine. Which is not meant to use such thick yarns. Oh well.

Son's Pullover

My son is outgrowing his sweaters. So I thought it was a good time to practice on the knitting machine. I worked up most of the front and back panels. Except for the neck shaping. I'd like to do that by hand. And most of one sleeve. I'll also shape the cap of the sleeve by hand.

I'm going to add a motif to it. I could have done this as an intarsia project. But I don't have the leisure of staying put in one place for too long. A portable project has a better chance of getting finished. Besides. A duplicate stitched design with a bit of added thickness is nice too.

Sock Scrap Yarn Swap

I'll post a pic of the contents as soon as my recipent gets the package. Why spoil the surprise. I did have a tiny swatch bit of the sock pal yarn left so I threw that in the package.

In the meantime I also took a picture of my sock yarn stash and will post it soon. It's been growing bit by bit since I started with socks a few months ago. I think I've got enough sock yarn for 8 pairs. So I'll try not to accumulate any more for now.

Winter Ski Mask

Lace Progress

My hands started to tire quickly when knitting the 'Amble' socks. So I took a break from them for a little while to work on my Kerry lace Blue Shawl.

I knitted up 2 inches and am on row 105. The shell stitch section. It's coming out beautifully. I've had to correct lots of spots where I messed up the lace pattern or somehow dropped a YO. Even frogged back four rows when I realized I forgot three rows of plain knit. That's what happens when I put down a project for such a long time. So glad this yarn is very forgiving.

And following the suggestion of finishing a row before stopping to take a break is not realistic. With over 400 stitches on each row, the odds are against me.

Mystery Yarn - A Review

Okay. So here are the specs for the mystery yarn I purchased. The total weight of the package was 20 pounds (including cones and box). There are 14 different yarns.

I've listed my findings below. Half of them I had to do the burn test to guess the yarn content.

I'm not sure what I should knit with the cotton/hmep yarn. I did come across a blogger who mentioned using that type of yarn for a lace shawl. And I guess it can be used for a tote. I'm not sure how soft hemp can as fabric against the skin.

Any suggestions what kind of projects to do with all this yarn?

I think I still got a deal even though I didn't get to choose. Each cone would easily retail for $3-$6 or more. They all look and feel like decent yarns. I'd probably have to work with them to see how they hold up on the knitting machine and the wash. Only the green one feels a bit rough like rug yarn. I'm not sure if this is because of the sizing (starch coating). The rest are moderately soft (wool/wool blends) to soft (acrylic blends). I think it took a couple of weeks to deliver.

Rescued Treasures

Like a lot of knitters. I find it fun to drop by the local thrift store and see if I can spot a treasure or two. The one nearby is small and rarely has any knit stuff. But I keep my eye out for vintage craft/knit magazines, yarn or a 'gently-used' sweater with yummy yarn I can recycle.

Once, I came across a bag of yarns. It had ten skeins in it. All quality although most did not have their labels. Although in thrift store terms, not a steal at $1.70 a skein. I'm still very happy with my find. They are wool/wool blends. Oddballs of different weights in boucle, textured slubby. or plain ply(s).

I went back today and found a classic merino pullover that fits me. And I snagged a lambswool angora in cream and beige. How soft and warm. And a striped sweater of merino/cashmere/angora blend. Soooft. And lastly....heart be still...A 100% cashmere pink shell by Armani (cost for this one: $2). Yep, that was my reaction too.

The cashmere yarn looks thinner than fingering weight. Maybe lace weight? Hmmm. It just looks like a t-shirt. Destined to become a lacey scarf or stole? (I think I'll keep this one for myself.)

It's a good day today.

SP6 Pal Strikes

I was not able to make it to Stitches East. But my secret pal was lucky enough to attend. And she was nice enough to picked up some goodies to send to me.

An autographed copy of 'At Knits End' (Woo hoo), a pouch of buttons with a baby chick motif (cute), a set of self striping sock yarn (love the blue tones) and an elegant note card.

I'm carrying the book with me so I can read it on my spare time. My little one almost ran off with the buttons and kept insisting the book was hers. And I quote her ' No way'.

I received my Pal Socks in the mail. They are wonderful. And they fit perfectly. I love the little cables running along the socks. I did want to mention there are two holes on each sock. Apparently this is a common occurance in sock knitting. (One I came across while kniting my first baby bootie. )

There are probably lots of online info on how to prevent the hole. Just google 'sock knitting prevent hole' for more references.

MK Peach Sweater Progress

The weather is getting wet and somewhat cooler. I've been playing with my knitting machine and making a plain sweater for my little one. I was hoping to use it tomorrow. But a bunch of other things have popped up for me to do. I don't think it will come to fruit tomorrow.

And look at the funny puckering on the cast on row ribbing. I'm told it's a common phenomenon. Almost like a tiny picot edging. Just wish it didn't ripple so much.

Here's what I got.
Only about half have their content marked. They look like they've been on a shelf for a while, little dust on them. But no musty smell. A mix of yarn weights and content. Thank goodness no chenille. I have enough of that.

I'll sort through them and let you know what I got but I'll probably have to try the flame test on a few of them to verify content.

Secret Pal!

My secret pal is awesome. She knit up a lovely purse in my favorite blue color. I'm going to debue it at a wedding this weekend. As you know I love all kinds of children patterns. She included another wonderful children knit book by Lucinda Guy, a Knitter's keychain, special post-its and a really cute bug magnet. I'd better find a high place on the frig for this before my little one runs away with it. ;-)

Jumped the Gun

Oops. I jumped the gun and had sent out the pal socks two weeks early. Deadline isn't for another week (not Sept. 1st).

I sent off an e-mail to my sock pal to hold off on opening the package until then. I hope she can wait it out.

I had fun knitting my first adult socks. The second time around (post-frogging) was more pleasant since I got to practice on baby socks.

I didn't get a chance to throw them in the wash before sending them out. And to see if the stitches even out or if the yarn would fluff up a tiny bit.

KBS Progress

Last night I worked on KBS. Mostly correcting mistakes. I frogged back a 4" wide section, down about 8 rows. And finished two additional rows. An achievement with kids calling "mommy mommy" every few minutes.

I hate how after I reknit a partial row, the yarn ends up either too long or too short. I think I'll even it off during lunchtime today. It bothers me to look at the 4x normal size yarn overs.

I finished the Socks for my secret pal and sent them off with one of the yarn labels. I had decided to try knitting the heel and toes in a different color. I think the colors work well together.

The finished socks look big. But when I measured them they should fit. I hope my sock pal likes them. She requested for a lot of color.

I'll post a finished pic when I get the chance. But here is the pre-frogged sock I started on DPNs and frogged after I completed the heels. The yarn has a nice plum color on one of the stripes.

I really like the self patterning. I had to make sure the colors
started off the same for both skeins. Knitting both socks at
once avoided different tensions on the second sock. Adding
a twist stitch to the gusset removed the 'hole'. I did not wash
the swatch. So I don't know if the sock would full and bloom a
bit and get softer. The yarn feels like cotton but not very soft.

Amble is born

I started the Amble socks today. Since I'm using fingering yarn, I reduced the number of cast on stitches to fit a small adult foot. I did about 1.5" of k2p2 ribbing. Using 1 circular for both socks at a time. My swatch with 2.5mm needles came out to 30st/4".

Unraveled

This CK knit shell is too small for me to wear. It's a nice soft yarn. It may have fulled in the wash. I decided to unravel and it and repurpose the yarn. A lovely powder blue merino wool blend.

I swatched some green yarn for the next 6 sox knit along "Amble".

Bottom half is on US#1 and top half US#2. Since it's a wool/alpaca blend I tried out a thin mystery yarn that feels strong like acrylic or nylon for the toes and heels. It has some elastic to it so I'm hoping it will wear well. The intended recipient was happy with the swatch colors.

Sock Swatch Messy Back

Here is the back of the swatch. To mimic knitting on the round I would bring the yarn back to the beginning of each row and knit. The swatch is wider than the area I need to measure because the sides stitches are inconsistent and loosen up.

Turns out, Baby boy A, now at 2.5 months, has florished to fit 6-9 months clothing. The sweater body fit but the sleeves were very tight.

I had hoped it would fit through the winter. So I'm going to knit a new one for Baby Boy A.

Needless to say the matching socks were too small. The match hat was only half finished. Thought I'd check with my DS. She did not want socks or a cap. She prefers cute shoes. And she tends to lose hats. So I suggested a hood on the next sweater. She said that would be perfect.

Baby girl sweater was given and laying it close to the baby's body it looks like it will fit.

I finally set up my knitting machine (KM).

My son had so much fun running the carriage back and forth. And I enjoyed the practice of getting familiar with my machine again. This is my first time hanging the hem of a waistband and leg cuff. Hmm. Still need some more practice. Only finished one pant leg.

I tried the sock on a two year old and the sock is too small. I also tried it on a chubby three month old. It is too small. I hope a little baby at the orphanage will get some use out of these socks.

Well Harry Potter makes another appearance. I saw a (Harry Potter) Gryffindor bookmark scarf that should be a quick project. How cute. Just had to start one.

I have some yarn left over from a Gryffindor sweater I made a couple of years ago. I pulled the plies apart to suit. Such a nice combination of colors.

Sent Package #2, Baby Girl Cardi

I sent out the package to my secret pal recently. She got it within a few days. I'm glad she found the contents interesting. It's fun looking for just the right things to send.

I placed an order for something for her some time ago to be included on the last package. Unfortunately it's on back order. Hope it gets in sometime this month. Or I might have to choose something else.

WIPs:
1-I have a sleeve and collar to do on the Baby Girl cardigan. This cardigan is due as a gift this Sunday. Not sure if I have time to work up the matching items. (It's the same pattern as the yellow one except the opening is in the back of the sweater)
2- I sewed on buttons to Baby Boy 'A's cardigan also due this Sunday.
3- I've picked up and worked on the lace shawl from time to time.
4- And got in a few rows on the Chute and Ladder socks.

Here's what the 'A' cardigan looks like prior to fixing the boo-boos and the buttons being added...

I still love the way it turned out.

Chutes and Ladder Socks for Donation

SockaPalTwoza revisited

Yeah!. I finally got the new circular needles to use for the SockaPaltwoza socks. The needles are Eur 2.5mm thick (instead of U.S. 2.25mm thick).

I checked my gauge on the 3/4 sock knitted so far to compare to a swatch with the new needles.and ... Gulp. It's a whole stitch off per inch. Argh.

After much consideration I've decided to alter the pattern to fit my gauge. The two partial socks will be frogged and redone. Oh well. Live and learn. I think I need a break from this project for a while... :-(

'A's Second Sock and Cap

I just finished Baby Boy 'A' second sock this morning. This is the first time I'm doing the kitchener stitch. With all that weaving this way and that way. It doesn't seem to work but it finished up seamlessly.

I came home this evening to a second blackout. Well I didn't let it deter me this time. I started on the Baby Boy 'A' matching cap. Got about fifteen rows done in the dark.

Almost Finished Cardigan 'A'

I'm trying to finish off the Baby Boy 'A' Cardi since the party for Baby 'A' is tomorrow. There was a blackout one night this week so I lost a night of potential knitting time. I'm almost finished with the cardigan. Just have to match the sleeve and finish the collar.

Update: Done. The cardigan is off the needles. Darn! found a couple of obvious errors on the cardi. The edge of the collar is lopsided and there is a stitch picked up incorrectly at the armhole. Oh well. I'll see the parents again in a couple of weeks. I'd rather fix it before giving it to them.

A. Collar edge should not have an indent.
B. An obious stitch picked up at the wrong spot for sleeve.

A Pledge

I've joined the Six Sock KnitALong . The sock group mentioned a Summer Sock Challenge to donate to Children in Common (CIC). Since I didn't know much about this organization. I looked into it. It brought tears to my eyes to know so many orphaned children are living in such cold and poor conditions. It was also mentioned that these children could use wool vests and sweaters too.

I realize that there are many many organizations locally and internationally that can use a knitted donation. But I like the fact that this one hand delivers the knits to orphanages so they don't get lost or sold.

So, I pledge the first sweater I knit out of the book my Secret Pal sent me will be donated to CIC. Along with any toddler socks I can manage to knit within the next month or so. :-)

A Perfect End to the Day!

I came home to find my hubby cooking dinner, the sounds of happy children and a copy of THIS on the kitchen counter. My heart was jumping up and down. I shouted "How did you know I really wanted this book?". He confessed it came in the mail and he took it out of the packaging because it was half soaking wet. We had a lot of rain today. Luckily just the edges of the dust cover got a little wet. The book was unharmed.

Thank you Secret Pal. I'm a big fan of Debbie Bliss' baby patterns. I love how classic the patterns look. Funny. I didn't think I had any collections. But I guess I do collect her baby books. Thanks for the note card too.

Baby Boy 'A' Sock

It took about two lunch hours to complete this sock. Pictured next to a spoon to show size. After I finish the set. I'll probably wash and block it slightly to flatten it. But otherwise it looks like the perfect size to slip over tiny little feet.

When I get a chance I'll make up a pair for my little one. I think she will really like the feel of them. 100% merino soft.

Lunch Hour Knitting

I thought I would start on Baby Boy 'A' matching socks. In 45 minutes of knitting I worked up half a sock. So I'm up to the tricky part. The heel. Hopefully the first sock will be finished tonight. Would be nice to see how it shapes up. Apparently these socks have been designed to stay on a baby's footsies.

Baby Boy 'A' Outfit in Progress

I need to start on one of the baby boy outfits. I checked with his mom to make sure she liked the pattern and the color yarn. (I'm using the same Luxury Baby Set pattern.) Pattern is fine but need to change the opening from the back to the front. And to change the yarn color to yellow instead of a nice ginger brown I had in mind.

Whew. Glad I checked before I knitted it. So I started on it yesterday. I have two and a half weeks to finish it. I also suggested making matching leggings. She agreed. Do you think I can finish it? Hmm... I think it may be time to dust off my vintage knitting machine to knit up the leggings.

Flowers of Light

Happy Independence Day!

I went with my family to see a local fireworks display yesterday. This is the first time my daughter got to see a display. She had a great time. I taught her that they are 'flowers of light'. She loved them. Saying 'wooow' at the sight of very large light bursts. We were stuck in traffic for over an hour on the way back. She just kept saying "wooow" during the entire ride. Wish I could have video taped her in the car.

Course this wouldn't be a knitting blog if I didn't mention knitting. I did bring along the pink sweater to knit on before the fireworks started. Good thing I can knit plain stitch without looking.

The Short Row Heel

Yeah. I made the turn on the sock heel. Not as hard as I envisioned it. Just have to remember to wrap the yarn at the end of every short row. I learned how to do short rowing at Knitty. http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/FEATbonnetric.html

It's interesting how slipping every other stitch makes a perceptively thicker fabric too. I'm just knitting one sock at a time. I think trying to knit two sock heels with DPN's on a first project is too much right now.

So I'm still waiting for my new circulars to arrive. I got antsy and tried to rig up a cord to my double pointed needles temporarily. With very disappointing results. I probably would have had better results sanding a point onto weed wacker nylon cord. Hmmm. That's an idea. Let me see if it's the same thickness...

I though I'd mention, my Secret Pal recieved the package I sent. Oh good. I was a bit worried it got thrown off course during delivery. So glad she's happy with the treats I chose. Month 2. Time to start my next treasure hunt. Oh. So much fun...

A Pink Vest

I spent the weekend focused on the little pink sweater. I finished the body last night. It is so cute. It looks like a vest without the sleeves and collar. My daughter thought it was hers and wanted to keep it. I had to hide it quick.

Oh darn. I forgot to garter stitch the waist edge with smaller needles. So it's too wide and does a little ruffle going across. I'm going to pick off a line of stitches. About an inch above the cast on and knit down from the body. Hate to have cold air going up baby's tummy.

I swatched up for the Baby Luxury set. Pink merino superwash. What a pleasure to knit. I'm psyched to work on this pattern because I'd like to present it in less than a month to the new parents.

So the socks are on hold for a bit. I have to check how tall I need to make them. Hmm.

My lace shawl is shaping up. I'm still on the Van Dyke and rib part. I got a little lost when I started this part. Until I realized they were 12 stitch repeats. It gets easier to correct when the pattern reveals itself.

Switch to Two Socks

Socks: I like to knit idential items at the same time. Like sleeves. So I thought I would test drive the 'knit two socks on DPNs method. http://www.keyway.net/crafts/MagicSox1.htm I had already knit about three inches on the first sock. So I worked up the second sock to match.

I put both socks together onto the DPNs and started knitting from two balls of yarn. I haven't fully gotten the hang of it. Still reading through the directions. I'll figure it out sooner or later.

In any case. I cancelled the 5-needle order and instead I ordered a set of extra long circular needles and will be using the Magic Loop method. It would be easier to pick up and put down this project without loosing my pace. Both socks to be knit at the same time. http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/mloop.html. I think I prefer the two socks on two circulars but these needles were on sale.

Baby Baby Baby!

This year is an exciting year. I'm an aunt three time over. Two new nephews and one new neice. (Not triplets). Of course I have to knit something pretty and soft for these little ones. I'm racing against time. These babies won't stay little for long.

I've joined the 'Baby Knitalong' 'cause I love company.

I went to the library found the perfect baby set. It's called 'Baby's First Luxuries' in the Knitter's Stash book. A newborn outfit. I'll probably knit it a bit bigger so it can be used this winter.

I have a bunch of superwash merino yarn that would be perfect too.

The Sock is Born!...Helpful Tips

The first sock is under way.

Tip #1: I heard mention that when using self-patterning yarn. I should check if both skeins of yarn begin with the same coloring sequence. I found that mine did not. I had wound off yarn about the size of a 1 inch ball from one skein before they matched. Not sure if I should knit from the center pull or from the outside. Since I matched the sequence on the outside. That's where I'm working off of.

Tip #2: I've worked with double pointed needles before and fell victim to the dreadded 'ladder effect' . To prevent a gap like drape of yarn between each group of stitches. Pull the yarn to tighten the first two stitches knit off of each group of needle stitches.

Tip #3: Using a 5-piece set of DPNs is better in my opinion to knit socks. The stitches are divided evenly on four needles so that would help 'mark' where to shape the heel parts. The fifth needle is working needle used to knit the stitches.

I only have the 4-needle set, I've ordered another set. By the time I get to the heel I can work with 5 needles.

Not too difficult yet. It's like knitting a mini sweater so far. I've finished the ribbing and am on the plain stitch part.

I'll hold onto any progress pics 'til the end.

SP5 and KBS

Secret Pal: I received my secret pal package today. Oh what a treat. Yarn from KnitPicks and a heart shaped zipper pull. The colors are yummy. My secret pal sent it to me for a future lace project. How thoughtful. And I have just the perfect project (on my 'to do' list) for the zipper pull.

My little one grabbed the bag of yarn and ran off with it as soon as she saw it. Had to bribe her with Graham crackers to get it back. ;-)

KBS:

I've arrive at row 61. Did I say it was 10 rows to get here. I meant 18. Mostly plain stitch so I knit most of it while riding in a car. And during bits of time here and there. This is one skein of yarn worth of knitting.

KBS Grows a Bit. A New Sock o Be Born

Okay. I've fixed the quarter panel. Ever notice when you re-knit partially the yarn is either too short or too long. Had to pick at the stitches to even out the yarn displacement for each row.

Now I'm on row 43. Ten more than yesterday. I'm still working on the same YO pattern in the center of the shawl. Only ten rows away from the Van Dyke and Rib pattern portion. Can't wait to get to that point. It's already large enough to switch to one circular needle.

I'm still dropping YO stitches from time to time. But I just need a crochet hook to pick them up. Whew. Don't want to go through the big frogging again. Luckily it's more obvious on the knit fabric where the stitch is missing.

For the socks I thought I might do a contrast yarn for the heels and toes. I'm hoping to use some superwash stash yarn with maybe a 'Wooly Nylon Thread' to reinforce those parts. The thread is strong and stetchy, used mainly to (sew) serger the sides of bathing suits. It's going to be some time before I knit to those parts. So I have time to find it. Unless if someone suggests something better to pair with my stash yarn.

I'll be casting on my first stitch tonight. Whoo hoo!

Gone Yarn Shoppin'

I've been matched up with my Secret Sock Pal. Hooray. Now where did those other #1 needles go?

I haven't any sock yarn in my stash?! Now I've got an excuse to go yarn shopping. I'll keep it simple. Since this is my first pair, I'll go with some self patterning yarn and a basic pattern.

I surfed the internet to get an idea of what kinds of sock yarns are out there. So many to choose from. I also stopped by my LYS. I found the yarn I think my sock pal will really like and bought it.

I went surfing some more and bought got some yarn for my SP5 pal. She loves merino yarns. Just like me. I don't want my secret pals to figure out I'm the pal so I'll wait until the exchange(s) are over to post the pictures. So I can hug these yarns for a little while until I have to let them go. ;-)

A Step Backwards

I lost some progress on the KBS. Last night I figured out I missed a YO about 7 rows back. I fixed it but then the rest of the quarter panel still didn't look right. When I looked at KBS a little more carefully I found I somehow managed to pick up an extra stitch which threw off the pattern. That was 14 rows back. Aargh.

So here is the fix in progress.

The Lace Adventure Begins

Okay, the results are in. The Mauve yarn got the most votes here and at the Knitting Forum. Lucky for me it's a fingering weight yarn and should not be too hard to work the first few rounds. It seems I was mistaken about the fiber. No alpaca. It's 100% wool. It's still a great color.

I tried the Emily Ocker circular cast last night. Seen here (http://bagateller.tripod.com/tips/circular.html). I got the hang of it after the second try. It turned out great. What a nice neat circle. Just pull the tail to tighten the cast-on stitches together.

I put the stitches onto two size 7 circular needles since I'm not a fan of double pointed needles (DPN). DPNs tend to flop around terribly with a few stitches on the needles. And mine always tend to fall or fly away.

There's something new on the sidebar. I'm getting familiar with blog design. What do you think of the WIP area I added? I played around with the HTML code which can be a bit scary. I do like how it came out.

Falling off of the Wagon

I must admit that I broke down and started on a swatch for the Japanese outfit even though my hands are still in splints. *sigh*. Unfortunately, my hands are still not ready to knit yet. I couldn't help it. All those wonderful yarns were calling to me.

I'm using larger needles to help size up the outfit. And to ensure it would fit. I'm writing the directions to knit the pattern top-down. That way I can add on some length as needed. With the gauge I'm using the width should be big enough for use this winter and possibly for next winter.

I'd like to clarify that I'm not really translating the written pattern but interpretting the charted diagrams. Here is an example of a Japanese knit chart.
